Relationships
My
postcards all connect to relationships of equality for women in the workplace.
I currently work at the College of Education for Grand Valley downtown; all of
the pictures that I used from are from my chair where I work at the Eberhard
building.
For
postcard 1, we had to use photoshop to create repetition to convey our meaning
and big idea, in my case equality and feminism. I repeated the idea of feminism
within the piece; Rosie the riveter was placed onto the tissue box, pink items
repeated. I also copy and pasted the Blue Footbridge into the background for a
different perspective of where I sit.
For
postcard 2, I have chosen a view from my chair the opposite direction looking
at the city. I changed the usual observation that I encounter by altering the
saturation of some things in Grand Rapids as to almost a fantasy seen as we
would want to see it. I altered the view so that the trees and foliage seemed
to have a pink tint. I extended the bridge as if it continues on into the city.
The buildings have been changed to greyscale and the sky has been altered to a
yellow/orange sunset. This is connected to the woman’s equality in the
workplace because it is my view from work and as I see it.
For
postcard 3, we were told to use the mask tool to conceal or reveal something
that we most likely would have not noticed before. I used the mask tool to
create new keys on the keyboard to spell out the word equality. The word
equality means so much, especially in the context of work. I showed it on the
keyboard because so much in my daily use I think about that word. I am always
using my computer and keyboard at work.
When
people bring up equality in the workplace, or that women should not be working
I get very defensive. I think everyone should have equal rights wherever they
work. We are all capable of so much, anything can happen. In this day and age,
the equality issues are not so bad, but at times there are those who choose to
bring back the ideas that women are not as equal as men. Quite a few people
still think that it is a woman’s place to stay home and not work as they
should. I think this is ridiculous because everyone has to work hard in order
for them to receive the benefits. Especially now, everyone has to work because
prices for everything have risen so immensely.

Your postcard 1 turned out really well! I am glad you went for the repetition of an idea rather than a specific item. That was an approach I never thought about.
ReplyDeleteI think that your third postcard is your most successful. It addressees your big idea, equality in the workplace, in the clearest way. Your second postcard is the most interesting visually. Your decisions in that postcard are the most ambiguous in their relationship to the workplace, however. I think that your first postcard needs a focal point. Because you altered many different things, nothing in particular really stands out.
ReplyDeleteAlright, here I go again.
ReplyDeleteYour big idea is equality. The sub-idea is in the workplace.
I think your most successful postcard is your first card. Like I said before, the repetition of an idea rather than a specific item was great.
I would say your least successful postcard is your second one. This is because I get the opposite of equality. Instead, I get a sense of "women power" or woman superiority. I would say an equal inclusion of blue would have really brought across the idea of equality.
Finally, as I said before, I think you need to show something more in postcard three as far as the workplace aspect of the project goes. However, I do get the strong message of equality so it isn't as big of an idea.
Your postcards portray your Big Idea fairly well! I especially like the third one, it is really subtle but yet really thought provoking. I wish that maybe a little more editing could have been done on it however, it seems just a little unfinished.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm not sure if the bridge is really adding that much to your first postcard. I almost think that it is taking away from it a little bit. I think if you were to maybe exaggerate and make more contrast in the pink items to the rest of the environment, it would portray your message a little better.
I also really enjoy the second postcard, it definitely reflects your printmaking emphasis. If you were ever seized by a random desire to take this idea into your printmaking, images like these would be nice. ( :
Happy Friday!!
You portrayed your big idea very well, and the viewer can really relate to your work. I believe that you focused well on each postcard as an individual piece. I can tell that you put effort into each one and specified the content in order to get each topic across. I believe the most successful postcard is the fantasy one. It demonstrates a real city in an artificial way. I think that all your images relate and hold together in a positive way, creating a series of works that all have a relationship with each other.
ReplyDelete1. Relationships / Equality
ReplyDelete2. Equality in the workplace for women
3. In your first postcard, i think the bridge takes us to a different place which disconnects us from the actual theme. I think your mundane elevator environment would have been more suited to your big idea. I think the phone is a proper color, if you changed it to pink it would be pink overload, which to you might be considered heaven. My only real critique of these postcards is that you are too blatant with your imagery. Rosie, and a website, are not as complex of an idea. How can your represent Equality for women in a more abstract way. How would the absence of women effect a workspace? Just like Kim Plaunt...
big idea= equality of women in the workplace
ReplyDeleteone of the conceptual strategies that you used with having the feminist web cite on the screen in the first postcard works well. the idea of representing women through the color pink was effective but in my opinion it was kind of singling out women, not making them equal to men.. because honestly i hate the color pink.. so not all women can relate to that.
i think that your third postcard is so subtle and very stunning. that postcard works well with the idea you are trying to get across
I definitely think you picked a good idea to work with...it seems to explore why you like the color pink. The postcards did a great job of communicating the idea of feminism in the workplace!
ReplyDeleteThe first postcard is almost too effective, however. Placing the footbridge in the background was really interesting and could create some interesting ideas if thought about. I think there should have been less "hints" at your big idea though. It would be more interesting if you made the viewer think a little harder. The craft is really great though!
The second postcard kind of reminds me of Any Warhol, which then makes me think about how Warhol presented women. I dont know if that is direction you were heading for, but it still made me think in feminine terms. I did not think of the workplace though.
The third postcard is the most effective. It has an interesting perspective and simple composition. Your hand, obviously feminine, relates the subtle change in the keyboard to the big idea. I really enjoyed how I had to find the change you made. Its also really great that you were able to change the letters so well.
Hey Emily!! You are working with the idea of relationships, specifically, the idea of equality in the workplace. I think that the elements you have placed around the first image work really well to enhance your ideas, but I am unsure that the bridge is needed – I am more interested in what is on the desk itself, the bridge seems like a distractor. In the second image, the extension of the bridge works really well to show the expansion of ideas about women in the workplace – I almost see it as women taking over the city. This second image is my favorite, and I think the way you have shown everything else in black and white works well to emphasize the pink. I also see this as relating to the workplace because I can see a slight reflection of a person in the window that you took the picture out of. In the third image, I think the text you have chosen works well you’re your idea and is very interesting, but it could have been faded a little more to look like the other letters on the keyboard.
ReplyDeleteI think your second postcard is your strongest one. I really appreciate how you manipulated the colors of our world to pink, a very feminine related color. Also, most of the things you changed to pink have a more masculine color in real life. The black and white buildings also help with pink popping out more. The third postcard is also strong because of your changing the qwerty to read equality. However, it could have been stronger if you zoomed in or out on the keyboard. The little segment of the desk is awkward to me. Over all I think all three of your postcards work well together to make the viewer think about woman in the work force and the equality that should be there.
ReplyDeleteI really like your second postcard, which to me, leaves the concept of your postcards more open ended and room for critical thinking about this image. It was also very technically successful. I like how you made your first postcard your own work place, but am not sure that repetition works so well to defvelop your concept in this one. I like the change of letters on the keyboard which makes something so common and the same, different and thought provoking but this image could be more visually interesting.
ReplyDeleteHi, Emily. How are you? So, first one. I enjoy that all the changes made are subtle and blend very well with the surrounding. This is also shown through a nice understanding of the technical skills used.
ReplyDeleteI really like purple and shades of purple so I enjoy the second one visually. Really that's all I have to say about that one.
I like and dislike how vibrant the word "EQUALITY" is on the keyboard. I like that you can decipher it from the rest, but I don't like that it doesn't match the rest. I don't know it's kinda just a personal thing I guess.
